Period 4 Summary of Section 2:

This section talks about the feelings of the new generation of young Arabs living in Israel. A young woman from the new generation, Suhad Hammoud, explains that they do not want to be called Arab Israelis becasue to her, "those words deny our identity and history".She says that instead they identify themselves as Palestinian citizens of Israel (as does 70% of Arab Israelis in a survey from 2000). Suhad also believes that Israel is a country that took her people's land and gave them passports. She says that she does not want to move because Israel is her homeland and her roots are in the land of Israel. The Arab world viewed the Arab Israelis as "whipped cream" Arabs becasue they had an easier life and because they were not helping the Arab world in the anti-Israel struggle. Suhad then explains that in Israel she is identified as the "other" and that EVERYTHING is Jewish, the holidays, the anthem, etc., they exclude the Arabs in everything. Only 33% in 2001 said the word "Israeli" accurately describes their identity as opposed to the 63% in 1995.
